The values of cultural heritage are receiving more attention today than ever before. Numerous national and international standards and agreements address the topic of “rescue and valorization” of cultural heritage. The UNESCO Convention for the Protection of the World's Cultural and Natural Heritage (World Heritage Convention) (UNESCO, 1972) and the International List of Intangible Cultural Heritage (UNESCO, 2003) are of fundamental importance and will play an increasingly important role in tourism. Today's tourists have seen and experienced a lot; they have become very demanding and are seeking ever more unusual attractions in a destination. For them, the authentic environment is of primary importance. However, the changes of recent decades have not only led to a loss of diversity in cultural and historical habitats but also to a fading of regional characteristics, and thus a loss of aesthetic values and identity of landscapes. The Bavarian example we studied represents an attempt to map and record the current state of Bavarian cultural landscapes, and to formulate recommendations for various specialist areas as a guide for future generations. Furthermore, we propose classifying certain areas in the Drava region as cultural landscapes to intensify their protection as cultural heritage.
